Cookie Policy
1. About this policy
This Cookie Policy explains how DataGuys.co LLC (“DataGuys”, dataguys.co) uses cookies and similar browser storage on our website and customer portal. We keep this short on purpose, because our approach is simple: we use only the storage we need to make the site work, plus one first-party referral cookie that is set only if you follow a customer’s referral link. We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies. For the full picture of how we handle personal information, please read our Privacy Policy.
2. What cookies and local storage are
A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store and send back on later visits. Local storage (and session storage) is a related browser feature that lets a site save small pieces of data on your device without sending them automatically with every request. Both let a website remember things between page loads — such as what’s in your cart or the fact that you’re signed in.
Some storage is set to expire when you close your browser (a “session” cookie), and some persists for a set time or until you clear it (a “persistent” cookie or stored value).
3. How we use cookies and storage
We use browser storage only for functions that are strictly necessary to operate the site or that provide a feature you asked for, and, only when you follow a referral link, to credit the customer who referred you. Specifically:
- Your shopping cart. When you add a product, we save your cart contents in your browser’s local storage (under a key named
dg-cart-v1) so your selections are still there if you navigate away and come back. This data stays on your device and is not a tracking identifier. - Signing in to the customer portal. When you log in, we set a secure,
httpOnlysession cookie (dg_portal) so the portal knows it’s you as you move between pages. Because it’shttpOnly, it can’t be read by JavaScript in the browser. While you’re signed in we also save a small flag in local storage (dg-acct) so the site menu can show a link to your account; it holds no personal information and is removed when you sign out. - Administrator sign-in. Our staff admin area uses a separate secure,
httpOnlysession cookie (dg_admin) that works the same way. Most visitors never receive this cookie. - Referral links. If you open a customer’s referral link (an address starting
dataguys.co/r/), we set a first-party,httpOnlycookie nameddg_refthat holds their referral code for 60 days, so they can be credited if you buy from us. It is read only by our own servers, is never shared with advertisers or anyone else, and is not set at all unless you follow a referral link. - Security and session integrity. Where needed, we use a session and/or anti-CSRF token to protect sign-in and checkout against cross-site request forgery and to keep your session valid. These are set only in connection with the actions above.
4. Categories of storage we use
Every cookie or stored value we use is strictly necessary or functional, with the single exception below. We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies. The one exception is a first-party referral cookie, set only when you follow a customer’s referral link.
| Category | Purpose | Examples | Expires |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strictly necessary | Keeps you signed in to the portal or admin area and protects sign-in and checkout against forgery. The site cannot function securely without these. | dg_portal, dg_admin, session / anti-CSRF token | End of session or on sign-out |
| Functional | Remembers a feature you chose — currently, the contents of your shopping cart on this device. | dg-cart-v1 (browser local storage) | Until you clear it or complete checkout |
| Functional | Remembers that this browser recently signed in, so the menu can show your account link. | dg-acct (browser local storage) | Until you sign out |
| Referral attribution | Remembers which customer’s link brought you here, so they can be credited if you buy. | dg_ref (only set when you open a referral link) | 60 days |
5. What we do not do
We want to be direct about this. DataGuys does not:
- use third-party advertising, retargeting, or cross-site tracking cookies;
- sell, rent, or share your data with advertising networks or data brokers;
- build advertising profiles about you or drop pixels and tags from ad platforms on our pages.
We do not run third-party advertising or tracking analytics. Our web servers and CDN keep basic access logs (for example, IP address, timestamp, and requested URL) to operate the service, troubleshoot problems, and protect against abuse; that logging is described in our Privacy Policy rather than set through cookies. Note that the third parties who process payments and provide our CDN and email — such as Stripe, PayPal, and Cloudflare — may set their own strictly-necessary cookies when you interact with their services (for example, on a payment page); their use of cookies is governed by their own policies.
6. How to control cookies
We use no advertising storage, so there is nothing to opt out of, and the referral cookie is only ever set when you choose to follow a referral link. You remain in control of your browser:
- Every major browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge) lets you view, block, and delete cookies and clear site data from its settings or privacy menu.
- You can clear your saved cart at any time by emptying your cart, completing checkout, or clearing this site’s local storage in your browser.
- You can browse most of our marketing pages without accepting any cookies at all — the session cookies are set only when you sign in, and the referral cookie only when you open a referral link. Clearing this site’s cookies removes it.
Please note that if you block or delete strictly-necessary cookies, parts of the site will not work: you may be unable to sign in to the portal or admin area, and if you disable local storage your shopping cart will not be remembered between pages, which can prevent checkout.
7. Do Not Track
Some browsers can send a “Do Not Track” (DNT) signal. There is no common industry standard for how sites should respond to it. Because we do not track you across websites or serve targeted advertising in the first place, our behavior does not change based on a DNT signal — we treat every visitor the same way described in this policy.
8. Changes to this policy
If we change how we use cookies or browser storage — for example, if we ever adopt a privacy-respecting analytics tool — we will update this page and revise the “Last updated” date above before the change takes effect. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
